Memo 8: Monkeypox

Key Points

  • DHS came out with a Monkeypox Report: https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/2022-07/22_0712_st_monkeypox_mql.pdf

    • “Data demonstrating effectiveness against MPXV are not available for most common disinfectants, however testing with vaccinia virus (a close relative) suggests that bleach, Virkon, Dettol, and Sanytex, are effective.”

      • “U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends the use of bleach and a number of quaternary ammonium reagents for use against emerging viral pathogens.”

    • Patients are contagious during the first week of the rash and direct contact should be prevented until lesions have crusted.

      • “Humans can be contagious before a visible rash appears and can continue shedding the virus weeks after symptoms have dissipated.”

    • Monkeypox can live on surfaces for weeks, but this is not related to its transmissibility from these surfaces.

  • US has the most cases of monkeypox and a higher rate of increase

  • Thursday, 2pm briefing with CDC’s Becerra to decide whether or not Biden admin will declare Monkeypox a public health emergency. This will mean the US has access to funds to increase accessibility and services for the people.

  • Fact sheet listing U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Response to the Monkeypox Outbreak: https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2022/07/21/fact-sheet-us-department-of-health-and-human-services-response-to-the-monkeypox-outbreak.html

  • In depth presentation on treatment and testing for monkeypox: https://emergency.cdc.gov/coca/ppt/2022/072622_slides.pdf

    • Considerations for PEP

      • “CDC recommends that the vaccine series be initiated within 4 days from the date of exposure for the best chance to prevent onset of the disease”

      • “If initiated between 4 and 14 days after the date of exposure, vaccination may reduce the symptoms of disease, but may not prevent the disease”

  • CA, NY & Illinois declares State of Emergency for monkeypox

  • The world’s only monkeypox vaccine manufactor, Bavarian Nordic, is halting production until October 2022

    • Only 2.5 million more vaccines for US

    • World needs around 10 million doses

    • European plant was planned to be stopped before the public health emergency declaration to create new production lines for vaccines against rabies and tick-borne encephalitis

  • Activists storm stage at International AIDS Conference to demand global action

  • Changing the name of monkeypox “isn’t a priority” according to Keletoso Makofane, a public health researcher and activist who is a fellow at the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard.
